The power clean is an Olympic lifting movement and total body exercise that builds strength and explosive power. Of course, you’re not likely to see this movement at your local gym, unless there’s an Olympic lifting platform there. But that doesn’t mean you should neglect it.
What does a power clean work? Everything. Your hamstrings, glutes, core, back, shoulders and arms are all activated when you’re ripping through a power clean. This is a compound move that hits essentially every major muscle group, plus it’s a functional movement, which means it translates into everyday activities. If you’ve ever picked someone up off the ground or floor and rested their weight on your chest, the way you might with a heavy box, you’ve done a clean.
If you can nail the force, it looks pretty badass. But if you’re doing it wrong, you’re going to hurt yourself. And if you’re the kind of dude that thinks he’s going to lift all the weight before you’ve got the form down, you’re begging for an injury, so let’s go over the basics. We’ll start from the top down and put it all together at the end.
